CARY, N.C. (Jan. 3, 2023) – The North Carolina Courage have re-signed goalkeeper Casey Murphy to a three-year, guaranteed contract through the 2025 season. The U.S. Women’s National Team mainstay has been with the Courage since the 2021 season.
Murphy made 18 starts in goal for the Courage in 2022, pitching six clean sheets. She made 58 saves for a 70.6 save percentage and held a 1.50 goals-against average. The 25-year-old has appeared in 89 professional matches, including 60 in the NWSL and 41 for the Courage. She holds a career 0.87 goals-against average and 77.4 save percentage.
“Casey has proven to be one of the best young goalkeepers in the world and has already had a great amount of success both at the club and international level. Having someone with her technical ability and soccer IQ to lead our back line is a huge advantage and we’re excited that she continues to trust us in her day-to-day development and growth,” said Chief Soccer Officer Curt Johnson.
“I’m thrilled to hit the field again with all the returning players and can’t wait to meet the new talent coming to the Courage this season. I know our commitment to setting the standard and being the best team in the league will bring out the best in all of us. I wish the players who aren’t returning the best and I’m rooting for them to have a great season. This off-season has been by best yet and I am so pumped to help the Courage win a championship in 2023,” Murphy said.
“Casey has proven over the years why she is one of the best goalkeepers in the world and we are excited to have her sign with here for a longer term. She’s dedicated to her craft, and this team, and that shows in her continued growth under Nathan (Thackeray). We look forward to having her in a Courage kit for years to come,” said Courage head coach Sean Nahas.
Murphy has been named to the USWNT senior team for both the 2021 and 2022 SheBelives Cup as well as every FIFA window for competitions ahead of 2023’s Women’s World Cup. She’s made 11 starts for the team and holds a 7-2-2 record with seven clean sheets.
She had a highly decorated career at Rutgers University, where she was two-time B1G Goalkeeper of the Year and a 2017 Mac Hermann Trophy semifinalist. She then began her professional career with Montpellier of the Division 1 Féminine in France, earning Best XI honors in 2018.
Murphy returned stateside in 2019, joining the NWSL and OL Reign, where she played through the 2020 season before a trade that sent her to the Courage in exchange for Crystal Dunn. The re-signing brings the Courage roster to 19 active players. Murphy joins Marissa Bova as the goalkeepers on the team.
